Serious Play (līlā, meaning ‘divine play’)
300-Hr Yoga Teacher Training
March 21 to July 26 | Hybrid Format

300-Hour Yoga Teacher Training
Serious Play (līlā, meaning ‘divine play’) inspires a joyful yet disciplined thread of personal practice and inquiry, cultivating consistency and growth in your teaching journey every weekend from March 21 to July 26.
Advanced Studies in Teaching Yoga
This Yoga Certified 300-hour training offers a dynamic hybrid format—part online, part in-person—with deep personal mentorship and a rhythm that honours both structure and spaciousness.
Through asana, breath, subtle body awareness, and sacred storytelling, this training helps you embody the teachings of yoga—not just intellectually, but viscerally. It’s for aspiring teachers, seasoned practitioners, and seekers called to deepen into their own presence, power, and purpose.
This 300-hour training is an invitation into the deeper work of teaching: cultivating precision in language, sequencing, and discernment; stabilizing presence so the teacher can truly hold the room; and committing to practice as a lifelong discipline rather than a credential. The work centers on holding the seat of the teacher with integrity and humility, honoring the long arc of teaching as something that unfolds through time, devotion, and lived experience.
Training Structure & Schedule
This 300-hour training unfolds in three intentional phases, designed to support depth, embodiment, and maturation over time. The hybrid format allows for sustained inquiry, relational learning, and mentorship while honoring the long arc of teaching as a lived practice.
Phase One: Serious Play
Online Immersion | March 21 – April 5
Saturdays & Sundays, 8:00am–2:00pm PST
Plus weekly individual online mentorship (1–2 hours)
This opening phase is an immersive return to the heart of practice. Through a tantric lens, participants cultivate a direct, lived relationship with the Eight Limbs of Yoga, emphasizing experience over abstraction.
Devoted personal practice sessions of asana, pranayama, and meditation form the backbone of this phase, alongside study of yogic philosophy and mythology as embodied, phenomenological teachings—both subtle and technical. Rather than treating philosophy as conceptual knowledge, we explore how these teachings are felt, integrated, and revealed through sustained practice.
The tone of this phase is rigorous yet spacious: serious in devotion, playful in inquiry. Weekly individual mentorship supports integration, accountability, and the unique unfolding of each practitioner’s relationship to the work.
Phase Two: Grounding the Inner Work
In-Person Intensive | Vancouver | April 11 – May 3
Saturdays & Sundays, 8:00am–2:00pm PST
This in-person phase shifts the emphasis from primarily inner cultivation to embodiment, relationship, and transmission. While personal practice continues to be supported with hands-on guidance, the central focus becomes the science and art of teaching.
Participants step fully into the responsibilities of an advanced teacher training, engaging both pedagogical precision and relational presence. Teaching is explored as a disciplined craft, an ethical responsibility, and an embodied practice.
Core Training Components Include:
-
Advanced asana analysis and intelligent sequencing
-
Functional anatomy and applied biomechanics
-
Subtle body studies (prāṇa, vāyu, nāḍī, cakra frameworks)
-
Skillful use of language, voice, and timing
-
Hands-on assists and consent-based touch
-
Class theming and philosophical integration
-
Observing, assisting, and teaching peers
-
Ethics, scope of practice, and teacher responsibility
-
Holding space, reading the room, and working with group dynamics
This phase emphasizes presence, responsiveness, and discernment—learning not only what to teach, but how and when to offer it.
Phase Three: The Long Arc of Teaching
Online Integration & Mentorship | May 9 – July 26
Saturdays & Sundays, 8:00am–2:00pm PST
Plus weekly individual online mentorship (1–2 hours)
The final phase returns online for a period of integration, refinement, and maturation. Here, teaching is no longer approached as technique alone, but as sādhana—a sustained, evolving practice.
Participants lead multiple classes online with structured feedback and support, refining their capacity to take the seat of the teacher with clarity and authenticity. Emphasis is placed on developing a teaching voice that reflects one’s own lineage, temperament, and artistic sensibility, rather than imitation.
Practices mature toward subtlety: attunement to timing (kāla), discernment (viveka), and steadiness (sthira). Teaching becomes less performative and more transmissive—rooted in listening, restraint, and trust in the work itself.
Philosophical inquiry widens in this phase, turning toward Western contemplative, mythological, and philosophical traditions, while continuing to honor and respect the roots of yoga in the East. Rather than appropriation or dilution, the inquiry asks: How do these teachings already live in our own soil? Participants explore how yogic wisdom finds resonance within their personal, cultural, and ancestral contexts.
This phase does not mark an ending, but a threshold—supporting teachers to step forward with humility, confidence, and a long-term relationship to the path.
Non-Contact Hours: Self-Study and Integration
The remaining hours toward the full 300-hour training are dedicated to non-contact practice and study, allowing participants to integrate, reflect, and deepen their learning. In yogic terms, this is called svādhyāya (Sanskrit: स्वाध्याय), which refers to the disciplined self-study of scripture, personal practice, and observation of one’s own mind and body.
These hours may include:
-
Personal practice (sādhana) and refinement of asana, pranayama, and meditation
-
Class preparation and planning exercises
-
Journaling, reflection, and study of yoga texts and philosophies
-
Observation and analysis of other teachers and classes
-
Integration assignments that support the maturation of one’s teaching voice

What graduates have said about Shelley's online/hybrid Teacher Training experiences:
"Once I read: 'As a seeker, Yoga is an inner revolution… as a teacher, Yoga is a sacred responsibility.' That sense of sacred responsibility is exactly how Shelley teaches Yoga. If one wishes to refine their asana practice, she is truly a gift to learn from. Yet I believe Yoga holds far greater potential than just physicality. For those seeking to move beyond the poses and find a teacher who can guide inner transformation, Shelley is one of those rare teachers. Yoga is a complex science, and she invites guided exploration with an abundance of knowledge—shared so kindly, so patiently. She teaches with clarity and integrity. I feel deeply grateful that Shelley is my teacher and look forward to continuing my studies with her."

Whether you are continuing to develop your own spiritual practise or growing as a teacher/facilitator, Shelley meets you exactly where you are and offers exactly what you need and more, you perhaps could never have imagined. The training is a considered balance of Asana practice, Pranayama, Philosophy and Retreat practise. With small intimate groups, Shelley is able to be there for 1:1s and infuse the training with everyday teachings all day. You feel immersed in a world where everything is sacred. Inspirational."

"Shelley’s 200 Hour Online Yoga Teacher Training has been a dynamic experience. As a Yoga teacher and student, the content and practical work has added a rich dimension to my teaching and personal practice. Each module offered thematic discussion, tools, resources and practices which have helped me to expand personally and professionally. The one-on-one mentorships were a bonus as we could elaborate on specific topics, discuss ideas and get a fresh perspective for our projects. Shelley’s warmth, knowledge, and passion is clearly evident. She is very encouraging, supportive and experienced.
I would definitely recommend taking an online training with Shelley. Her course has helped me to deepen my practice and has inspired me to further my studies."

"Stepping into a practice with Shelley has always been a transformative experience. Her sequencing, cues and her knowledge of yoga is comprehensive and unique. I still find myself in poses that I have never been in after 15 years of practice when I am under her guidance.
I have thought about participating in a Yoga Teacher Training for many years. One of the barriers to enrolling was the block of time necessary to commit to a destination training or even local trainings. Having the ability to do the training online part-time has allowed for me to complete the training with a ton of flexibility as I was able to travel on the weekends, complete my training and still have a large portion of my day open on the weekends.
If you are looking to begin the journey into yoga, I highly recommend this as the place to start. Shelley’s ability to seamlessly teach yoga on and off the mat was the exactly the experience I was looking for to deepen my practice."

"Shelley Tomczyk is a teacher's teacher, generously sharing the vast depth of knowledge she has gained through decades of personal practice and study. Her students appreciate her ability to share the teachings of yoga from a wide range of perspectives appealing to a diverse studentship. She includes psychology, tantric philosophy, history and religions, mythology from many sources and wisdom from a variety of practices to support students from many backgrounds and proclivities. Her 'no conclusions mind' allows her to meet her students where they are at. Shelley shares openly about her own experiences with yoga to inspire her students to explore the teachings in pursuit of an authentic and fulfilling life - tasting all the world has to offer."
~ Hannah MacDonald, Whitehorse Canada

"Shelley brings over twenty years of experience into her teaching spaces. Through the synthesis of her own studentship with classical yoga, tantra yoga, mythology, psychology, social work, meditation, pranayama, creative expressions, therapeutics, and several other spiritual lineages. She offers an interdisciplinary approach to yoga. Shelley infuses her classes with complexity and intensity while taking care to only use as many words that are necessary. Largely influenced by Anusara yoga, her cueing for alignment is articulate and intentional. Shelley identifies that 'yoga meets us where we are at' and helps us to find that relationship. Amid her sophistication as a masterful teacher of teachers, she maintains accessibility for new students - sparking deeper interest in the practice every step of the way. Her ability to hold space and make sure that each individual student knows they are seen is next level. Without pretension or judgment, Shelley's presence of being reminds us all that yoga is not only making it to the mat, but rather, yoga is a way of life."

"Shelley is one of the city's most accomplished yoga instructors and Vancouver is lucky to have her. Her classes weave in elements of Anusara, Vinyasa, Iyengar, and Ashtanga yoga. In addition, yogic philosophy and Indian mythology pepper each class offering students a richer flavour and a more well rounded yoga practice. Shelley's unique teaching style can be attributed to her extensive knowledge and in-depth study of yogic philosophy combined with her holistic approach to healing. A background in psychology, therapeutics, and women studies enables her to explore different aspects of yoga in her workshops and teacher trainings, unafraid to leave a stone unturned. Her ability to teach is pure magic, so inspiring, nurturing, and versatile. Truly life-changing."

"My heart is filled with deep gratitude & honour to know Shelley & to have studied with her in India. The 300HR Teachers Training in Tiruvannamalai, India was a transformational journey. Shelley's wealth of wisdom and guidance throughout the course revealed depths and strength within my being and my asana practice, that are continuing to unfold naturally. The focus and emphasis on Yoga Therapeutics and Universal Principles of Alignment has built integrity & a deeper understanding of my body's anatomy. Shelley's presence continues to inspire my Yogic lifestyle.
The training took place at Trivenu II Ashram in Tiruvannamalai, India, located just few miles from Arunachala Mountain, known as a holy hill and a significant place for devotees of Sri Ramana Maharshi. We had the opportunity to be a part of the Ashram lifestyle, which included daily meditation, teachings and Kirtan. The Hosts of the Ashram are wonderful beings that are dedicated to their path of devotion, it was inspiring to be in their presence everyday. The food that was served at the Ashram was extraordinary, we had a taste of one of the best traditional Indian foods with a western twist, that still supported the yogic lifestyle. We had the blessing to visit sacred sites of Tiruvannamalai, which were all captivating in their essence. This was one of the most beautiful & transformational experiences in my life. I am eternally grateful."

"Two weeks prior to the start of Shelley's 300 hour teacher training in India, I decided to take the plunge and join in last minute. Although entering somewhat blindly, I knew that this training would speak to the very definition of "challenge" in all aspects of its meaning. 7 months later, I can easily say that this month was the spark that initiated a shift in my perspective, changing the entire course of my life in the most positive of ways.Shelley leads the training in a way that encourages and inspires individuality, while at the same time facilitating a strong sense of community and support. While at first I found life at the Ashram to be very difficult, the end of the course had me in tears saying goodbye to the inhabitant family and morning meditations that had become so dear to me. As is inevitable with new experiences like this, I encountered various uncertainties and emotional 'mountains' over the course of the month. Nevertheless, I consistently found myself supported and cared for. Shelley was always available to address anything that came up; in fact, she encouraged further exploration of any questions that came about. This type of environment cannot help but foster the type of personal growth one ought to experience in order to become a competent yoga instructor. With regards to the material taught in this 300hr training, Shelley puts high emphasis on safe alignment of poses, the art of sequencing, development of effective themes, yoga therapeutics, and deeper layers of yogic philosophy. As such, my style of teaching has evolved from basic to subtly intricate. Since incorporating the principles I learned, it is easy to see this change reflected in my classes, as students respond consciously and effectively to cueing. I have since received plentiful feedback that consistently describes a newfound appreciation for alignment and body awareness. In short, I am profoundly appreciative of Shelley's 300-hr training, and would highly recommend it to anyone seeking development in their yoga practice, methods of instruction, and in themselves. It is more than just a yoga teacher training...rather, it is a mosaic of content and context through which you may attain and explore deeper layers of yourself."

"I had been teaching classes consistently after my 200 hour training in 2016; however, I really felt that I had reached a plateau in my current abilities and skills. Lucky for me, another local rural yoga teacher whom I had done classes with personally recommended that I sign up for the 300-hour YTT with Shelley. This pandemic has been challenging, but one advantage is that many aspects of life moved online and as someone in an isolated rural area, it gave me the opportunity to do this training live online with Shelley, an opportunity I may not have had otherwise!.
Shelley's training was an amazing fit because I had not previously learned the universal principles and how to teach yoga from the inside out! She takes yoga classes to many different levels, from anatomy, alignment principles to philosophy to in depth class theme integration. She has deep connections with her past students and they gave back by attending some of the training weekends as guests to enhance the modules. The online component did not hinder our small class at all - we practiced teaching intensively and got in depth constructive feedback from Shelley and other students. Right away in the training I was able to integrate her feedback and my new learning to teach better classes to my own yoga students.
Shelley has taught me that there is so much more to know about yoga; I really am in awe of the experience and depth of knowledge that she brings to her teaching. Thank you Shelley, you have been a catalyst for more inspiration and confidence to continue my self-study and teaching in yoga!"

"As a fitness educator and former nurse, I have actively taught yoga for several years. However, I wanted
to add more depth to my yoga teachings and took on an extensive search looking for the perfect
teacher. I consulted the internet, friends and local yoga mentors. My search ended when I met Shelley.
A pandemic brings with it much uncertainty including the prospect of online yoga certification. I was
needlessly concerned as Shelley put me at ease immediately. Shelley’s extensive practitioner resume
speaks for itself, but the experience of her teacher training and mentoring offered me so much more
than I had anticipated. Honest, open hearted access, one on one mentoring, small class size,
accountability and genuine learning resulted in a deep understanding of the yoga principles and it’s
applications on and off the mat. I also found I achieved some physical relief from chronic back pain
which has been resistant to traditional methods of healing (massage, physiotherapy, etc).
Shelley takes a genuine intersect in her students. The relationship that emerges is one of authenticity,
care and kindness. Her high standard for teaching is apparent and resonates throughout.
The online training more than prepared me as I move forward in my yoga journey and in life. I would
highly recommend if you are searching, as I was, search no more."
